Wi-Fi Used to Be Simple
You probably remember when Wi-Fi was just… Wi-Fi. You bought a router, it worked, and you did not think about it again until the router broke.
Then someone told you about “dual-band” and “5 GHz” and suddenly you needed a translation app just to pick a router. And now there are numbers again - Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7 - and it sounds like the marketing department is making it up as they go.
They’re not. Wi-Fi generations actually mean something useful. Here is what.

If you only remember one thing: Wi-Fi 6 is the current standard you should look for in a new router. Wi-Fi 7 is the next one but you probably do not need it yet. Wi-Fi 6E is Wi-Fi 6 with access to a new radio band that helps in crowded neighborhoods.

How Wi-Fi Generations Got Numbers
For years, Wi-Fi had confusing technical names. Wi-Fi 4 was actually called “802.11n.” Wi-Fi 5 was “802.11ac.” Wi-Fi 6 was “802.11ax.” The Wi-Fi Alliance finally realized nobody outside a networking conference knew what those meant, so they started giving them simple numbers.

What Wi-Fi 6 Actually Improves
The headline feature of Wi-Fi 6 is not raw speed. It is efficiency.
In a crowded home with 20+ devices - phones, laptops, smart TVs, thermostats, doorbells, speakers - your old Wi-Fi 5 router has to serve them one at a time, very quickly, like a busy waiter juggling orders. As more devices join, the waiter gets overwhelmed and everyone waits longer.
Wi-Fi 6 lets the router talk to multiple devices at once, like a waiter who can carry twelve plates instead of two. It also lets devices schedule their turn instead of shouting over each other, which cuts down on annoying interference.
Real-world result: Your Wi-Fi 6 router will not make your gigabit internet plan faster on a single device. But your whole household will feel smoother - fewer buffering moments when someone starts a video call while someone else is gaming and someone else is streaming.
What Wi-Fi 6E Adds
Wi-Fi 6E is the same technology as Wi-Fi 6, but running additionally on the 6 GHz band instead of the crowded 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
Think of radio bands like lanes on a highway. The 2.4 GHz band is a local road - lots of interference, slow but good range. The 5 GHz band is a highway - faster, but everyone is on it. The 6 GHz band that Wi-Fi 6E unlocks is a brand-new, empty highway with nobody else on it yet.
The catch: 6 GHz does not travel through walls as well as 5 GHz, and it is only useful if your devices support it. Most phones and laptops from 2023 onward do. Smart home gadgets generally do not.That’s okay - smart home stuff can stay on the other bands.
What Wi-Fi 7 Brings
Wi-Fi 7 is the newest generation, and it is genuinely impressive on paper - speeds up to four times faster than Wi-Fi 6, better handling of interference, and the ability to use all three bands (2.4, 5, and 6 GHz) at the same time.
The reality check: Wi-Fi 7 routers exist but are expensive. Very few devices support it yet. Most people will not benefit from Wi-Fi 7 until 2027 or later. If you are buying a router today, Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is the sweet spot.

A Practical Rule
If your current Wi-Fi works well for everything your household does, there is no emergency to upgrade. But if you have noticed buffering, lag, or dropouts that you cannot explain, and you have more than 10 devices connected, Wi-Fi 6 will probably fix it.
And whatever you buy, make sure it is backward compatible - every Wi-Fi 6 or 7 router works perfectly with your older devices. They just run at the older device’s top speed. You do not need to replace everything at once.
